Making a Motorcycle Exhaust Manifold Stud

Project:
Making a new exhaust manifold stud for my motorcyle

Difficulty Level (Easy, Medium, Hard, Insane):
Easy

Process:
I was getting my motorcycle (1984 Honda Magna V30) ready to sell and noticed that one of the exhaust manifold studs had fallen out. This probably happened with the previous owner as I didn't really have a chance to ride it a lot over the last two years and just never noticed it.

It was pretty simple, turn a piece of O1 tool steel down to 0.320", then thread it with an M6x1.0 die, then heat, quench and temper it.

Pictures:
One of the existing studs I was going to make
The exhaust port with the missing stud
Turning one end down to size
Using a die to cut the proper thread
Turning the remainder of the stud down to size and threading the other end
The finished (but not yet hardened) stud
Heating it up with the oxy/acetylene torch
The quenched part before tempering it
The tempered stud (light straw yellow color)
The installed stud

Time:
1hr

Savings:
$5.00

Conclusion:
It works great
