Push Buttons For My Emco Maximat V10 Metal Lathe

Project:
Replacing the push buttons for my Emco Maximat V10 Metal Lathe

Difficulty Level (Easy, Medium, Hard, Insane):
Easy

Process:
The push buttons on my Emco Maximat V10 Metal Lathe were not working very well (as is very common with those buttons) so I figured I'd take them apart, do a good clean and have a look at what might be going on.

Taking it apart was fairly easy; just a few screws and that's it. I gave it a good clean with brake/electrical parts cleaner. However, the plastic push buttons at the top literally disintegrated (after all, the lathe was made in the 70's). Again, this is apparently a fairly common issue with these lathes.

I just happen to have picked up a few 1" pieces (24" x 36" and 16" x 30") of Teflon at the local scrap yard for $20 bucks so I cut off a 1" piece on the table saw, fed it through the thickness planer to 1/2" by 5/8" and cut the ends off on the chop saw. All I had to do now is drill a hole slightly smaller than the metal pin that attaches to the switch module and I was all set.

The only disadvantage is that the original buttons were black whereas the Teflon is white. I didn't think it was that big a deal though.

Pictures:

The disintegrated push buttons
The strip of Teflon I cut on the table saw
A close-up of the rough piece of Teflon
After it was put through the thickness planer
Drilling the holes in the back to match up with the metal pins in the switch module
After it was all done. The large button was pushed down a bit further after I took this picture to match the height up with the rest of the buttons

Tools:
Table saw
Thickness planer
Chop saw
Drill press
Knife

Materials:
1" x 1" x 16" Teflon

Cost:
$0.25

Time:
1hr

Savings:
No idea, can't even get these anymore

Conclusion:
Works great and the grease wipes right off!

Hi Chris, Just wondering if you know the recommended tool size for a V10p as I would like to get replaceable carbide tip tools.

@anonymous, i use 3/4" tool holders. they were original 1" holders but I had a local machine shop machine them down to 3/4" as the material was hardened and my SS tools couldn't cut it. if you're using a quick change tool post you'll probably have to go with 1/2" or 3/8" tool holders but i like the 3/4" ones because they're a lot more sold. hope this helps

Chris,

I am a new owner of an old Emco V10-P and I am trying now to bring it back to its operability. As Canada is a metric system country I do hope your machine is metric too, isn't it? If it is I would like to ask you for a picture of one part of your lathe. I would appreciate your reply to my email pch@pch.pl . I live in Poland. Thanks and best regards, Pawel

Hi Chris, I am rebuilding a V10 P and am in desperate need of some photos of the wiring in the box, particularly where the larger capacitor wires are plugged in. The machine I have, had all the wires disconnected and just trying to get everything hooked up without a fire hazard. If you have any pics could you forward them? My email is sleepydoc@sympatico.ca

Please tell me the switch sequence to activate high speed forward for the lathe. Thanks

@yellow_cad, if I label the switches left to right, 1-5, to go high-speed forward, press #2, then press #4. To go backwards, press #1, then press #4. To stop, press #3. To turn on the mill, press #5. Hope this helps

Well, I tried my machine by pressing the low speed forward button (2) and with lathe at speed, I pressed the two high speed switches down as one (4) and the spindle speed actually slowed down slightly instead of increasing any speed at all. Does this indicate that my high speed winding may be shot?
